From the ground, look up at the roof and look for blacken shake. (You will probably need to go across the street to get a full view of your roof). The more blacken shakes that you see, the worse condition your roof is in. These spots could be scattered throughout your entire roof.
Also, look for wood pieces or splinters on the ground around your house. This will indicate that your pine shakes are deteriorating.
Thirdly, look for exposed felt from missing shakes. The felt is black in color and you should be able to tell the difference between the blacken shake and the black felt paper. Do not attempt to climb up and walk over your roof, as this can be dangerous.
The life span of a pine shake roof is approximately 5 to 8 years, depending on the weather conditions and other factors. When deciding on what you would like to replace the pine with, remember that there are some architecturally controlled areas that require you to put on certain material. Finding out what you can or cannot put on your roof should be your first step. An easy way to find out is to look at the neighboring houses in your area to see what they are covered with. That will give you agood idea of what roof material is allowed in your area.
