Over the last number of years many people like you have been growing more and more conscious about how we treat our environment and the lasting effects that what we do to it may have on future generations. At JAYSON ROOFING we are no different. We have been searching out new environmentally friendly products and ways of doing things in the construction and renovation industries in order to assist you in being more freindly to the environment, whether you are building a new house or building, or simply renovating an exsisting one.
Q. Are there any “Green” options when it comes to roofing?
A. Yes. While no business has found a way to properly recycle an asphalt shingle yet, there are some things that you can do to become more environmentally friendly:
- Choose a roofing product with the highest warranty that you can afford. By doing this, you will keep the material on your roof and out of the landfill for a longer period of time. Many products are on the market now that come with a limited lifetime or 50 year warranty. Some of those products may last longer than that in some conditions. Concrete, Steel and Composite materials are just a few of these products. While Fiberglass asphalt shingles come in various warranties and costs to suit a lower budget.
- Choose to roof or re-roof your house in Steel. You can have steel panels installed over existing asphalt shingles thereby keeping them out of the landfill, as well. Most steel panels carry a limited 50 year warranty, lasting twice as long as a basic asphalt shingle.
- Choose to roof or re-roof your house with Concrete Tile. Concrete has been a proven roofing material for decades and has been known to last longer than most other roofing materials. When the roof has finally lasted through its lifespan, the material can be recycled into road crush or used for other purposes.
- Choose to roof or re-roof your house with IKO shingles. Canadian made IKO shingles are the first in the asphalt roofing industry to receive independent verification of recycled content from the prestigious Scientific Certification Systems organization. SCS certification now allows builders to claim valuable LEED credits for their construction projects. Visit www.iko.com for more information.
